28 Years of Delgamuukw

Honouring Our Past, Building Our Future

December 11th, 2025 marks 28 years since the landmark Supreme Court of Canada decision in Delgamuukw v. British Columbia, which affirmed the Gitxsan Nation’s inherent rights and title to our Laxyip (traditional lands). While many other First Nations have relied on that decision to secure vital economic opportunities for their communities, our Gitxsan Simgigyet (Hereditary Chiefs) continue to strive for and work towards that same level of prosperity for our people.

This includes ongoing negotiations for the Prince Rupert Gas Transmission (PRGT) Pipeline project. Traversing approximately 120 KM of Gitxsan Laxyip, PRGT will serve the Ksi Lisims LNG facility, a Nisga’a co-developed project the federal government has declared to have national significance.

Hear from our Simgigyet as they share their vision for a prosperous future, emphasizing how the PRGT project is vital to our people and balances their responsibility to protect the land with creating long term economic opportunities for the Gitxsan Nation.
